Lake Davis is located 7 miles north of Portola, California. This lake was created in 1967 for recreational opportunities. The Lake Davis Recreation Area offers a wide variety of summer outdoor experiences including: camping, picnicking, fishing, hunting, boating, mountain biking and wildlife viewing. Water skiing is not permitted. Frequent strong winds can cause the lake to become very hazardous for small craft. In the winter, ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are the favored activities.

  Fishing
Trout inhabit the lake. There is a five trout daily limit all season. Because of spawning cycles, tributary streams are only open from July 1 through September 30. Nearly 3 miles of Big Grizzley Creek just below Lake Davis is open to fishing on a public access strip. Fishing is regulated by the Callifornia Department of Fish and Game.
  Hunting
Mule Deer, waterfowl, quail and some small game may be hunted in the Lake Davis Recreation Area. Hunting is regulated by the California Department of Fish and Game.
  Area Guidelines
Camping is permitted in developed campgrounds only. Vehicles are allowed on developed roads. In developed recreation sites, build campfires only in fire rings provided. Keep dogs on a leash. Please do not bathe, clean fish, wash clothes or brush teeth at water hydrants as they can contaminate water, clog drain rock and attract yellow jackets. Please pack out or use the waste receptacles for all your trash.
  Point of Interest
Smith Peak Lookout, located about 7 miles southwest of the dam, provides a good view of Lake Davis and an opportunity to learn about the job of a fire lookout. Lookouts are operated full time during fire season and visitors are welcome.

However, reservations can be made by phone, toll-free, or on the Internet at the following campgrounds: Almanor, Hallsted, Red Feather, Running Deer, Horse Camp, Lakes Basin, Chilcoot and all campgrounds located in the Lake Davis, Frenchman Lake and Antelope Lake recreation areas.
